NHE ​School Counseling Curriculum

Lesson 1: Meet the School Counselor

Ms. Wright will begin teaching lessons the week of August 30.
The first lesson for all classes is an introduction to Ms. Wright and school counseling. Students will learn how their school counselor can help, expectations for counseling lessons, and get to know Ms. Wright and each other. 

Lesson 2: Ways to Stay Safe

This lesson begins the Child Protection Unit from Second Step. You can learn more about Second Step here: www.secondstep.org.
In the first lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will teach the Ways to Stay Safe:
1. Recognize: use the safety rules at home and school to decide if something is safe or unsafe
2. Refuse: if something is unsafe, use words that mean "no"
3. Report: tell an adult to keep everyone safe 

Lesson 3: Always Ask First Rule

This lesson continues the Child Protection Unit from Second Step. In the second lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will review the Ways to Stay Safe and teach the Always Ask First Rule, or asking permission from the adult in charge when someone else asks you to go somewhere, do something with you, or give you something. 
Ms. Wright will teach the remaining lessons from this unit in October and November.

Lesson 4: Recognizing Bullying

This lesson begins the Bullying Prevention Unit from Second Step. You can learn more about Second Step here: www.secondstep.org.
In the first lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will teach how to recognize bullying, which is aggressive behavior that:
  • is repeated over time
  • occurs in a relationship where there is a power imbalance
  • intends to cause harm or distress and/or has a serious harmful or distressing effect on the target

Lesson 5: Refusing Bullying

This lesson continues the Bullying Prevention Unit from Second Step. In the second lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will review the how to recognize bullying and teach how to use assertiveness skills to refuse bullying if it happens to you or someone else. 

Lesson 6: Reporting Bullying

This lesson continues the Bullying Prevention Unit from Second Step. In the third lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will teach how to use assertiveness skills to report bullying to a trusted adult at home or school and how reporting is different from tattling.

Lesson 7: Bystander Power

This lesson continues the Bullying Prevention Unit from Second Step. In the final lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will teach about bystanders, which are people who know that bullying is happening to others, and how bystanders can use their power to help stop bullying by reporting and refusing.

Lesson 8: Safe and Unsafe Touches

This lesson returns to the Child Protection Unit from Second Step. In the third lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will review the Ways to Stay Safe and Always Ask First Rule. She will teach the difference between safe touches (that help you feel loved and cared for) and unsafe touches (that hurt your body or feelings), as well as how to say no or refuse touches that are unsafe or you don't want. 

Lesson 9: The Touching Rule or The Private Body Parts Rule

This lesson continues the Child Protection Unit from Second Step. In the final lesson of the unit, Ms. Wright will teach the Touching Rule or Private Body Parts Rule - Another person should never touch your private body parts except to keep you healthy - and how to use your assertiveness skills to refuse and report if this rule is broken.

Lesson 10: Emotions and physical sensations

In this lesson, students will learn how our bodies have physical reactions or sensations from big emotions, like a racing heart, shallow breathing, skin feeling hot, tightening muscles, etc. Students will do some exercise to practice paying attention to the sensations it causes in their bodies and then practice calming their bodies with deep breathing.

Lesson 11: Using senses to manage emotions

Students will continue learning about how big emotions cause physical reactions or sensations in our bodies and how to use their senses to calm their bodies and minds. Students will do some exercise to increase their heartrate and then focus their attention on a specific sound or sight to slow their heartrate.
